Congestive Heart Failure Disease
Congestive heart failure disease is the condition that occurs when the heart cannot pump an adequate supply of blood to the body.
As we get older it is normal for our heart to lose some pumping ability, however depending on the severity, you may experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, persistent coughing, fatigue, dizziness, confusion and cold hands and feet.
Heart failure occurs most often in people who have heart disease, high blood pressure, or who have had a heart attack.
All these factors cause stress to the heart, which may impair its functionality over time.
There are no definitive statistics for life expectancy with heart failure as this will depend on many factors including your age and at what stage the disease is diagnosed.
However, as with all heart related problems, lifestyle changes will increase your survival rate and your quality of life.
Exercise, weight loss, reducing alcohol consumption and stopping smoking all help with congestive heart failure management.
The most important lifestyle change is reducing your intake of sodium (salt) along with fluid restriction.
These lifestyle changes must be done under the supervision of your health professional who will also prescribe the best medication for your specific condition.
It’s Your Heart. It’s Your Life.
It’s Your Choice.
