Don't Be Overwhelmed By Heart Attack Anxiety.

Well let's be honest, if you have suffered a heart attack anxiety is your most likely emotion.

The levels of anxiety will vary in intensity and duration, but your anxiety will normally reduce in intensity over the days and weeks following the heart attack.

However for some people, due to the level of their anxiety heart attack symptoms may occur.


Various studies have found that reducing anxiety, can help to reduce:

  • Blood pressure
  • Heart rate
  • Cholesterol levels
  • and therefore speed recovery and provide a better quality of life.

    More importantly it can also reduce the risk of future heart problems.

    This was especially true in men.

    During an anxiety attack heart rates increase dramatically so it is vital that anxiety is reduced by various methods including,

    • Counselling
    • Stress Management
    • Relaxation Exercises
    • Coping Techniques
    • Mediation.
    If these are not sufficient then Antidepressant medication may be helpful.

    Everyone experiences different emotions and experiences during their recovery some of the common ones are:

    • Recurring memories of the heart attack
    • Nightmares about the heart attack
    • Distress when passing hospitals
    • Distress on the anniversary of the attack
    • Expecting the worst with every ache or pain
    • Persistent sadness
    • Pessimism
    • Irritability
    • Feelings of helplessness
    • Loss of interest in hobbies
    • Loss of interest in sex
    • Loss of energy
    • Difficulty concentrating
    • Poor memory
    • Difficulty making decisions
    • Disturbed sleep
    • Loss of appetite and weight loss
    • Overeating and weight gain
    • Thoughts of death or suicide; suicide attempts
    • Headaches
    • Muscle tension and muscle aches
    • Trembling or twitching
    • Sweating or hot flashes
    • Feeling light-headed or out of breath
    • Nauseous
    • Going to the bathroom frequently

    There is no question - anxiety and heart attacks are linked.

    Research shows that reducing heart attack anxiety is extremely

    important in the treatment and reduction of heart attacks.

    Do not ignore this research.

    Take advantage of any form of counselling or anxiety reduction program offered during your rehabilitation.

    If you experience any of the above symptoms after your rehabilitation program has finished, seek medical advice.
