THE MAIN RECOMENDATIONS FOR A HEART DISEASE DIET

To follow a heart disease diet you should:

Reduce saturated fats

Increase fibre

Reduce salt

Limit foods that contain high cholesterol

Reduce dairy products

Increase oily fish

Here are some ideas how you can do this in practice:

Reduce the number of times per week that you eat red meat.

Pick leaner cuts

Reduce the size of your portions

Cut off as much fat as possible

Substitute red meat with poultry and remove all skin

Do not fry

Use polyunsaturated spreads in moderation rather than butter

Always use low fat dairy products

Eat an extra portion of vegetables every day

Do not use salt in cooking

You may think this looks like a very boring way to eat, however there are loads of choices and combinations so once you have broken your old habits you won’t feel like you are missing out on anything at all.

Many people find that for the first few months the easiest way to stick these suggestions is to follow a suggested daily menu program.

There are a number of books available or your medical professional may have some literature.

The Eat to beat heart disease program is based on the recomendations of the American Heart Association.

It has some fantastic menu sugestions & recipes, and also provides loads of information, motivation, and even a "virtual" personal fitness trainer!

It’s Your Heart. It’s Your Life.

It’s Your Choice.
