Ischaemic Heart Disease
Ischaemic Heart Disease is a degenerative heart disease where the blood supply to the heart is reduced. This is due to fatty deposits building up in the arteries (arteriosclerosis).
The reduction in the blood supply can be the cause of angina pain and can lead to congestive heart failure.
On its own this build up of plaque inside the arteries is unlikely to cause a heart attack.
However ischemic heart disease is the underlying factor in most heart attacks due to the fact that the plaque can rupture or a blood clot develop.
This can totally block the narrowed artery cutting off all blood supply to the heart.
In other words - a heart attack.
