What are the signs of high blood pressure? Are there any natural ways to lower blood pressure, to normal blood pressure range?

Because there are no signs of high blood pressure many of us do not realise we are at risk.

High blood pressure is a significant risk factor for many illnesses, including heart disease and heart attacks.

It is estimated that it affects a third of all adults.

Because you can have the condition for years without knowing it it has been nicknamed the “Silent Killer”.

High blood pressure is caused when blood vessels constrict. It is then harder for the blood to flow through them and this increase the pressure inside them.


There is only one way to know if you have high blood pressure.........

You need to have it checked by a health professional at least every two years


Blood pressure is recorded as two figures.

For example 135/87mmHg (mmHg stands for millimetres of mercury. This is usually referred to as 135 over 87

The first number is the pressure in your arteries when your heart is forcing blood through them (systolic pressure).

The second number is the pressure in your arteries when your heart relaxes (diastolic pressure). Your blood pressure varies depending on what activities you are doing, how relaxed your muscles are, and it is also affected by anxiety.

Some people’s blood pressure even goes up dramatically just because they are anxious about having their blood pressure taken! (Nicknamed -White Coat Syndrome).

What should my blood pressure be?

High Blood pressure is a reading over 140/90mmHg.

This means if either your systolic reading is above 140 or your diastolic reading is above 90 your blood pressure is high. These readings are the only signs of high blood pressure.

If your blood pressure is consistently high it will need to be treated either by lifestyle changes and/or medication. Men’s normal blood pressure readings are the same as women’s. In fact 140/90 mmHg is the level for high blood pressure for everyone, regardless of age or sex.



High blood pressure can easily be treated, and there is very good evidence from many studies that lowering blood pressure causes a large reduction in heart attacks and heart failure.


Your medical advisor will decide what levels you need to stay within and how best to achieve this, depending on how high it is and on what other 'risk factors' you have for heart disease and stroke.

Natural ways to lower blood pressure

Do a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise at least five times a week.

Lose weight if you are overweight

Keep daily alcohol consumption within the guidelines ie, men should drink no more than three or four units a day, women no more than two or three units each day.

Hypnosis for lowering blood pressure can also help, particularly self hypnosis or tapes to help with relaxation.

There is no question - Uncontrolled high blood pressure puts you at greater risk for a heart attack and stroke!
